Almost all state laws require that cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as those who drive motor vehicles. However, those who cycle on the road still feel extremely vulnerable. Some drivers don’t think cyclist belong on the road and act aggressively. Other drivers just don’t pay attention to cyclists. Either way, a cycling crash can be mentally and physically devastating.
Approximately 45 percent of bicyclist fatalities occur in dark conditions. Time of day plays a role in this as well. The hours from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm account for more pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities than other times of the day.
Unlike drivers, cyclists are fully exposed. Therefore, broken bones, head injuries, and spinal cord injuries are common results of serious cycling crashes.
The SCDOT reports, “The year 2015 recorded 16 cyclist fatalities in South Carolina caused by crashes with motor vehicles.”
